Roseanne & The Conners Wiki

David Jacob "D.J." Conner is the rambunctious first son of the Conner household on the TV series Roseanne. The part of D.J. on the original series was played by then-child actor Michael Fishman and reprised by Fishman in the revival.

About D.J.[]

The third child of the Conner family and was the youngest before his younger brother, Jerry Garcia, was born. D.J. is the most gullible, naive, and foolish of all the Conner kids. Many jokes are made towards D.J.. The family teases him a lot in the episode, "Homeward Bound" because they discover D.J. has started masturbating. He loves to tease and bother his sisters Becky and Darlene, though deep down, it's obvious the love is there.

D.J. tended to be indulged more by Roseanne and Dan, partly because he wouldn't get into serious situations as much as his older sisters and had a less argumentative personality; however, he is nonetheless a very mischievous child, and well-versed in the art of blackmail.  This is sometimes tolerated by his parents, who like to preserve his innocence when their lives become difficult, but not by his sisters, who are shown to (for the most part) despise him.

Becky would often babysit her younger brother and indulged him somewhat in early seasons, but as she focused more on her romantic life and career she saw him more as a distraction and a nuisance, a belief that his actions did little to counter.  After she eloped with Mark, there was little connection between her and D.J., although he greeted her happily the first time she came back.

Darlene, on the other hand, would retaliate physically when D.J. pulled some trick on her or otherwise irritated her; Roseanne reminisced in one episode of how Darlene had dented the wall with D.J.'s head 'to mark how tall he's getting'. Despite being intimidated by his middle sister, D.J. continued his attempts to annoy her for the entire series.  However, when he visited her at college, he honestly told her that he missed her; on some occasions, Darlene and D.J. were shown working together very effectively against either Roseanne or Becky.

As for the Healys, D.J. definitely looked more towards Mark, despite his lack of intelligence. He dismissed David as effeminate and overly- emotional on many occasions.

In Season 9, D.J. starts developing a definite interest in filmmaking, as evidenced by his various posters of Steven Spielberg films, his desire to film Darlene giving birth (although he ran away repeatedly when watching another birth video as practice) and his making a stop-motion clay-animated film; in the final episode, when he moves into David's old space in the basement, Roseanne encourages his idea of turning it into a miniature studio.

21 years later in Season 10, he has had a daughter named Mary Conner and revealed that he married a woman named Geena Williams from Season 7. In the past 20 years since Season 9, DJ has matured greatly and has become a very normal, caring, easygoing father figure, much like his father, Dan. Whilst he has since retired from the military, Geena has not, meaning he has to raise Mary by himself. This later leads him to being absent for work a great deal which results in Mary often being alone. Darlene, Becky and Dan decide to step in to let Mary move in with them so that she has company in the absence of her parents.

After almost a year of this arrangement, Geena returns from the military for a visit. Realizing how much she has missed out on Mary's life, Geena decides to leave the military permanently, reuniting D.J., Mary and Geena as a family once more, leading Mary to moving out with the Conners and back into DJ's home. Throughout Season 4, they are seen very little which later leads to DJ exiting the series for Season 5.

List of Appearances[]

Across 10 seasons of Roseanne, D.J. was absent in 11 episodes, whilst in all four seasons of The Conners, D.J. has been absent in 35 episodes, making the least appearances out of the main cast. When he does appear, his screen time and dialogue are limited, usually being featured for just one or two scenes without having any impact on the plot. After Season 4, he has left the series in a main cast capacity, though in Season 6, there’s no mention of him at any point.
