Fisher, Jackie Harris's abusive boyfriend who appears as a recurring character in Season 5. He was portrayed by actor Matt Roth.
About Fisher[]
Fisher is introduced already dating Jackie after they met at a singles dance that Jackie attended with Nancy. He is considerably younger than Jackie, a point of great anxiety for her. Jackie also has a really hard time anytime she sees him speaking to any woman closer to his own age. Fisher is a freelance commercial artist and helps Roseanne with the menu design for the newly opened Lanford Lunch Box restaurant despite the fact that Jackie breaks up with him (for the first time) around this same time due to the pressure she feels about their age difference. They eventually reconcile at one of D.J.'s ice hockey games and decide to move in together immediately to Roseanne's frustration. Later on Jackie tells Roseanne that she stopped seeing her therapist, having been convinced by Fisher that it was no longer necessary. When we see Fisher again he reveals he is having trouble finding work and loses his temper during a game of poker with Dan, Ty and Chuckie when he loses a hand. In the episode, Crime and Punishment, Darlene catches Jackie changing and discovers the bruises all over her back from Fisher's physical abuse. Jackie attempts to defend him and blames herself for his actions. Once Dan learns what's happened he slips away to confront Fisher and beats him up. The neighbors hear the commotion and the local police come to arrest Dan for assault and battery. Jackie initially feels extremely conflicted about ending her relationship with Fisher despite his abusive behavior but Roseanne refuses to let her continue to see him. In his final appearance, War and Peace, he attempts to patch things up with Jackie when she and Roseanne come to move her things. There he admits, in front of Roseanne, that this abuse has taken place before. Jackie ends things with Fisher and he is never seen again.
Trivia[]
He is only ever referred to as the mononym, "Fisher."
In the episode, Of Ice and Men, Fisher mentions that as a kid he played on a hockey team and offers his help to coach D.J. when he goes out for the hockey team.
Later in the episode, Of Ice and Men, it is revealed Fisher and Jackie began dating when he was 27 and Jackie was 37, although she initially told him she was only 34.
